When Can You File for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income; and provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.
How Does It Work
The Social Security Administration has a tool that helps you discover whether you are entitled to SSI benefits – it only takes 5 or 10 minutes, and you can find the tool here: https://ssabest.benefits.gov/.
If you qualify, there is still a process that is required to apply for and get the benefits.
There is a lengthy description of what is required to apply for benefits here: https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/text-apply-ussi.htm.
An attorney can help you navigate this application process, and ensure that you get the benefits you are entitled to get.
